A film you listen to

Dark Was The Night is a concept album: one character, one life, start to finish. It opens with a boy watching his father die. It follows him through a hard Philadelphia upbringing, into a love that looks like the way out, and on to the betrayal that ends him. The last two tracks are the title and the dying thoughts.

The sound moves with the story: hardcore, super-lyrical Philly rap when it needs to hit, lush R&B-leaning records when it needs to breathe. NovA spent two years on it: the verses, the features, the pacing, down to the ad-libs. His goal, in his words, was to make “the first great underground hip-hop classic of the 2020s.”

Every track is on YouTube. Pick a scene and it plays right here, in order, if you let it.

NovA

NovA is a rapper, songwriter and producer from Philadelphia. He’s been writing since he was 14 (the first stage he ever stood on was his school band’s, with a trumpet) and he came up on 2Pac, JAY-Z and Lauryn Hill. What stuck was the writing: technical, dense and meant to mean something.

After the experimental The New Black, he spent two years on Dark Was The Night, trading beats with producers around the world over the internet and rewriting until the record held together as one story. He calls the Styles P collaboration on “Hell On Earth” an honor (“his penmanship is impeccable”) and points to “Oh God, Good Lord” as one of the verses he’s proudest of.
